There are a lot of good and positive aspects of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder); you simply need to focus on those aspects and learn how to manage them - and you can manage them.
Although the label of ADHD carries a stigma can make you feel stupid and not as good as the average person; it is in fact, a gift. There are many things that come easily to a person with ADHD, that may be more difficult for the average person. If you have ADHD you can find ways to turn the negative aspects of the symptoms into positive qualities.
Take a look at a few positive aspects of ADHD and take pride in them. People with ADHD:
Are very creative because they look at things differently from the average person.
Have amazingly natural qualities of perception and are highly intuitive.
Have boundless energy.
Have a great sense of curiosity. They need to know the how and why of everything. This is more than just plain curiosity, it's a real need they must fulfill to understand how something works.
Can multi-task. Yes, that's right they can multi-task; and don't let anyone tell you there is no such thing as multi-tasking! Although someone with ADHD may not be able to focus on one thing at a time, they can do many things all at the same time, picking up exactly where they left off for each task.
While ADHD has been classified as a disorder, it does not mean that you have to suffer from the stigma of the label. Research has shown that the brain of a person with ADHD develops slower and some of the functionality is different from the average brain; it does not mean that you are stupid or lazy. All it means is that you have a different way of learning.
And bear in mind that, despite the standardized measures and test scores on many of the statewide tests, those with ADHD are highly intelligent.
Just look at some famous people who have ADHD: Pablo Picasso, Dustin Hoffman, Jim Carey, Jack Nicholson, Elvis Presley, Robin Williams, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Prince Charles, Michael Jordan, Terry Bradshaw, Henry Ford, Mozart, Bill Gates, Christopher Columbus, Jack Nicholson, Elvis Presley, and there are a lot more. So you are in good company!
People with ADHD think "outside the box". This makes you special and unique; it's a gift.
Your objective is to turn the negative aspects of ADHD into positive aspects. As parents, make sure you teach your ADHD child that it's not a bad thing, work with your child and bring out those positive aspects - find their strength and build on it.
Use your gift and remember ADHD is not a disability; it's simply a different way of learning and doing things.
